To be honest with you, I don't really listen to a lot of new music. It's mainly just the stuff I catch in the middle of Chris Moyles or in between Scott Mills being a miserable git when I'm traveling to work. And most of that is pretty shit.
I think I spent most of the year listening to Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream, so I'm probably not the best person to judge a music category. However, I did manage to stumble across 5 albums released in 2004 which I would encourage everyone to download (legally, of course!) as soon as humanely possible.
5) Enimem - Encore: Well, I liked it. Stand-out track: Encore/Curtains Down.
4) Air - Walkie Talkie: The French Moby. Stand-out track: Alpha-Beta Gaga.
3) Beastie Boys - To The Five Boroughs: A return to the old skool. It's like the 90s never happened. Stand-out track: An Open Letter to NYC.
2) Orbital - The Blue Album: Their last album is thankfully one of their best. Stand-out track: You Lot (featuring some bloke called Christopher Eccleston).
1) Goldie Looking Chain - Greatest Hits: I knew this lot would be big the moment I heard them. It took the rest of the UK a little longer to catch onto the Welsh rappers, and while Half-Man Half-Machine was a better single than Rappers Kill People it was also impossible to play on the air before 11pm. It took the brilliant East 17 spoof You Knows I Love Ya - with the incredibly honest line about buying cheap jewelry from Argos - to really cement their place in the pantheon of hip-hop Gods. The GLC are The Streets meets The KLF via The Baron Knights. Who could ask for more? Stand out track: Your Mother's Got a Penis.
